Criss was born in San Francisco, California. His mother, a native of Cebu, is a Filipina of Chinese, Spanish, and Filipino descentand his father has Irish ancestry He attended Stuart Hall for Boys and then later graduated from Saint Ignatius College Preparatory In 2009, Criss obtained a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Performance degree from the University of Michigan

Zooey Deschanel, born in Los Angeles, California, is the daughter of cinematographer/director Caleb Deschanel and actress Mary Jo Deschanel (née Weir). She is of French (from her paternal grandfather) and Irish descent and is the great granddaughter of Paul Deschanel, the 11th President of France She was named after Zooey Glass, the male protagonist of J. Agron was born in Savannah, Georgia, the daughter of Mary (née Barnes) and Ronald S.
